Green School Activities 2009-2010
April Meeting
Today our Green Schools Committee met to talk about how we are saving energy around our school. All the teachers are so pleased with everyone turning off the lights, checking heaters are turned off and making sure doors and windows are closed. We are doing a great job!
The Greens Schools Committee are trying really hard to remind everyone in our school to save energy. It is the job of teachers and all the children, not just the Green Schools Committee members!
Gabriella had been busy at home making labels to put up around our school, reminding everyone of what we need to do to save energy. Thanks Gabby!
The children talked about how special our planet was – It is the only planet with people, so we have to look after it.
Remember: Múch an solas!!! (Turn off the lights). SAVE OUR EARTH!
Here are some photos from our meeting today.
Green Schools – Raising the Flag!
We had a great day on Friday, with Aisling and John the lollypop man helping us to raise our first green schools flag, which was given to us because our children are so good at keeping the school litter free and tidy!
Here are some photo’s of our celebrations, including the children singing our special ‘Litter Song’.

Minutes from February Meeting
We had a great Green Schools Committee Meeting this morning. All the children on the committee were practising our new ’slogan song’.
‘Switch off the lights and close the door, and we will get a green flag once more!’
We also looked at where our new noticeboard is going to be. Soon each class in the school will be designing posters for this noticeboard.
Keep checking those lights and computers!!

Minutes from January Meeting
Marco from Room 4 helped Ms Henry record the minutes from our January meeting. He did a great job. Here are the key points:
Green Schools Committee meeting: 29 January 2010
1 We talked about our energy survey and the following points were made.
- Teachers were good at keeping lights off in the staffroom.
- We must remember to turn off the computer when it is not being used.
- We must ensure that the lights are off when not in use and we can remind teachers of this.
- If we see lights on in a classroom and nobody in it we should turn them off.
2 The committee members decided that all of the school should get involved in saving energy. They decided that we should make labels and posters and put them up around the school to remind us of how to save energy. The committee members decided that the junior and senior infants could make posters showing how we can save energy and first class could make labels and they could be put up in the classrooms and around the school.
At our next meeting we are looking forward to seeing posters and labels made by our junior and senior infants and by our first class.

Minutes from December Meetings
Franchesca from Room 4 helped Miss Coghlan record the minutes from our December meeting. She did a great job. Here are the key points:
Green-Schools Committee Meeting 18th December 2009
- We talked about whether lights were left on or not. Some children noticed that lights, the interactive whiteboard, computers and the photocopier were left on when they aren’t being used.
Action: We will have our energy review ready for the next Green Schools Committee meeting (January 2010).
2. We looked at the flagpole that arrived during the week. We decided who we will invite to hoist our Green Schools Litter and Waste flag.
Action: a) Aisling is going to ask her friend if she can come to our celebration.
b) The OPW men will put the flagpoles in the yard for us during the Christmas holidays.
- We checked the yard for litter.
Action: At our next assembly the Green Schools Committee will remind everyone to keep the yard clean.
Next Meeting:

December Green Schools Committee Meeting
The Green Schools committee held their third meeting this morning. We discussed key issues involving our school saving energy. We also braved the cold (and a little snow) to go outside with our litter pickers and rubber gloves to clear the school yard of any litter that should be in the bin.
The Green School Committee members say: If you see litter, pick it up and put it in the bin!

2nd Green Schools Committee Meeting
What a busy time for the Green Schools Committee! They have all been working hard, running around the school making sure all the lights are turned off when no-one is in the room, all the computers are switched off and all doors and windows are closed. We are trying to save as much energy as possible!!
In the meeting today it was decided we would continue checking our school for ways to save energy. We made a list on our whiteboard of all the things we could check. We are going to record our findings on a special ‘Green Schools tally chart’ and show everyone at our next meeting!
Keep up the good work!!!!
November 25th 2009
Minutes of 1st Green Schools Committee Meeting
The Green Schools Committee held their first meeting.
Our focus is on Energy, and saving energy. We had a discussion on the ways we save energy, and the following points were raised:
- Turn your light off after finishing your bed time story.
- Don’t leave a heater on for a long time.
- Turn off the computer when you’re not using it.
- Close doors to keep heat in the room.
- Solar energy – light from the sunshine (like in our Parents Room)
The committee members are going to collect information on how energy is used in each area of our school, including the Staff room, the hall and the parents room. They will be looking at whether computers are switched off, lights are switched off and whether doors and windows are closed.
At the next meeting, they will report back their findings to the rest of the committee and the teachers.
Well done on a successful first meeting!!

Green Schools Committee hold their first meeting
The Central Model Infant School Green Schools Committee held their first meeting today! It was a great success, with lots of great suggestions from the children as to how we can save energy in our school. They didn’t even use electricity in the Parents Room, where the meeting was held! We hope that everyone will help us to get our second Green Schools flag.
